Plot summary
Mafia boss Giovanni Manzoni survives an attempt on his life and his family's at a barbecue, then informs on Don Luchese, who goes to prison. Giovanni, his wife Maggie, their son Warren and daughter Belle join the FBI witness protection program under Agent Robert Stansfield, who moves them until they land in Cholong-sur-Avre, Normandy. Giovanni tells the village he is writing a historical novel about the Normandy landings, though the locals know the subject better than he does, and he slips away to learn why the water in the house runs brown. Maggie blows up a grocery store whose owner insults Americans. Belle arranges private math lessons with Henri, a college student teaching at her school, and Warren is beaten by a group on his first day.

- The novel's author, Tonino Benacquista, wanted actors who carried their own legend for the film and proposed Robert De Niro for the lead role in The Family. A letter was sent to De Niro and he agreed to join the project.
- Luc Besson wrote the part of Belle Blake with Dianna Agron in mind, yet she still had to attend several auditions before winning the role. The cast and crew of Glee supported her leaving the show to make the film.
- Before casting John D'Leo as the son Warren Blake, Luc Besson auditioned more than 500 actors for the part in The Family.
- Michelle Pfeiffer joined The Family in June 2012 because she was keen to work with Robert De Niro. The two had appeared in films together before but had never been able to film scenes with each other.
- A dog named Emeron was chosen to play the family's pet Malavita, and was trained by a specialist. Robert De Niro was the only person besides the dog trainer to spend time with him during the training.
