Plot summary
During World War II, Captain Stefan Brandt of the Wehrmacht arrives at Huis Doorn, the estate of the deposed Kaiser Wilhelm II, to take command of the Kaiser's bodyguard. The Germans fear an Allied spy is plotting to kill the Kaiser, who still matters symbolically to the German people. The Kaiser's adjutant, Colonel von Ilsemann, warns Brandt to stay away from the female servants, but Brandt begins an affair with a maid, Mieke de Jong. She tells him she is Jewish, and he tells her to keep the secret. Gestapo Inspector Dietrich then orders Brandt to identify a British agent believed to be inside the household.
