Plot summary
Protracted storms and heavy rain leave the low-lying parts of London under water, and a woman gives birth to a son, Zeb, in the middle of it. The rain keeps falling, the flooding spreads across Britain, and food and shelter grow scarce for the people driven from their homes. The woman leaves the city with her husband R and the baby for the house of R's parents, where the family lives on what supplies remain. When those run out, R and his parents set off for a distribution facility, leaving the woman alone with Zeb. Two strangers, a man and a boy, arrive at the house, and she serves them food before they go.
