Plot summary
During the Blitz, a theatre company prepares King Lear, but the actor-manager known as Sir is in hospital after being found on the streets during an air raid. His dresser Norman pleads with Her Ladyship and with stage manager Madge not to cancel that night's performance. Sir then walks in, having discharged himself, and insists on going on despite his exhaustion. He dresses while struggling with memory lapses and jealous weeping, blackens his face for the wrong role and forgets the play's opening lines, while Norman deflects his temper with silliness and old stories. Members of the company come to the dressing room for his appraisal: the young actress Irene, Thornton as the Fool, and Oxenby, who refuses to help with offstage work. Sir also tries to write his memoirs.
