Plot summary
The world has become a scatter of floating islands, home to rogues, peasants and petty lords who live by two rules: eat, and avoid being eaten. Dragons, monstrously hungry creatures, infest it. Lian-Chu, a hulking man with a heart of gold, and Gwizdo, a high-strung schemer, work as dragon hunters, though they are nowhere near the best at it. The two want only to quit the trade for a small farm. On a nearby island, Lord Arnold fears the return of a dragon that spreads destruction, and no one who has gone after it has come back. His niece Zoe takes matters into her own hands and recruits the pair, certain she has found the champions she wanted.
