Michel Serrault
Biography
Michel Serrault was a French actor whose career spanned five decades and whom American audiences remembered for the role of Albin, also called Zaza, in La Cage aux Folles (1978). Born in Brunoy, France, he took up dramatic studies in Paris and began on the cabaret stage with Robert Dhery's theater troupe before it shifted toward filmmaking in the mid-1950s. He made his film debut in 1954, and one of his earliest films was Henri-Georges Clouzot's Diabolique (1955). His partnership with writer and actor Jean Poiret produced La Cage aux Folles and its first sequel. He won three César Awards for Best Actor, for La Cage aux Folles, Garde à vue, and Nelly and Monsieur Arnaud (1995). His other films included The Old Lady Who Walked in the Sea (1991) and The Girl from Paris (2001). He died in 2007.
