Plot summary

In Paris in 1910, as the Seine floods, Emile Petit works as a shy cinema projectionist, and his friend Raoul drives deliveries in a homemade vehicle. A delivery to the Botanical Gardens finds the professor away and his proboscis monkey, Charles, in charge. Raoul meddles with two potions, one that grants operatic voices and one that makes plants grow enormous. The chemicals mix and explode, and something monstrous slips out into the city, caught on Emile's camera. Newspapers carry the story. Commissioner Victor Maynott, a mayoral candidate, has his deputy Pâté look into the sightings. Lucille sings at the club L'Oiseau Rare, where her aunt Carlotta presses her toward a match with Maynott, who also courts her.

A Monster in Paris had a budget of 28 million euros, very large for a French production, and director Bibo Bergeron had to put the project on hold for nine months because he struggled to raise the funds.
To meet the requirements of co-producer EuropaCorp and make the film easier to sell in English-speaking countries, the English voices were recorded in Los Angeles before the animation itself; Vanessa Paradis is the only actor to voice her role in both the English and French versions.
The appearance and gestures of the monster and of cabaret singer Lucille were modelled on the actors who voice them in the French dub, Matthieu Chedid and Vanessa Paradis.
Designing a touching monster proved tricky: its final grasshopper look came from an idea by a designer on the team, while director Bibo Bergeron took the disguise Lucille makes for it from the cabaret singer Aristide Bruant's costume.
The animation was done by a studio that Bibo Films created in Montreuil specifically for A Monster in Paris, employing a team of 140 people.
