Plot summary
Hannah Stern is an American teenager who would rather be anywhere than at her family's Passover dinner, where the same stories about the past are told each year. Her aunt Eva says that she resembles her namesake, Chaya, but not who Chaya was. When the seder calls for the front door to be opened for the prophet Elijah, Hannah finds a Polish village of 1941 on the other side. She finds herself in the home of Rivka and Rivka's aunt Gitl, who take her for their cousin Chaya and treat her talk of the future as the ramblings of a girl who has been ill with cholera. The following day the family walks into the village for a wedding, but Nazi soldiers arrive and say the village will be resettled.
