Plot summary
Willie Hale, the younger son of Lord Leland, sells his belongings in Kenya and returns to England with almost nothing. He spends much of what remains on a dog. His father, tired of his failed ventures, still gives him money to enjoy himself. Willie calls on the actress Mary Crayle, an old girlfriend, then meets Dorothy Hope, a family friend and heiress. Dorothy is expected to become engaged to Grand Duke Paul, a Russian aristocrat. Willie, his sister Susan, and Dorothy attend the Derby together, where he wins on a long shot. Dorothy finds Willie charming, though he has little money and Mary remains in his life. Her father, Mr. Hope, is a wealthy man in linoleum.
