Plot summary
San Francisco in the 1860s: Vivienne Le Coudy, a Métis Franco-Canadian, has been courted by a wealthy Irish collector of art, but she will not give up her independence to him. She falls in love with Holger Olsen, a Danish carpenter, and travels with him to his cabin in the north of Nevada. She declines to marry him and takes work as a barmaid in Elk Flats, a town in the grip of Alfred Jeffries, a corrupt landowner, and his alcoholic son Weston. When the Civil War begins, Olsen, a veteran of the First Schleswig War, chooses to enlist in the Union Army because he opposes slavery. Vivienne is against the decision.
