Plot summary
Governor Lawrence Sullivan Ross sends Texas Ranger David Kingston to the isolated border town of Mount Hermon in 1887. Mexican citizens there have been murdered or have gone missing, and a Mexican general whose niece, Maria Calderon, is among them has threatened to invade unless she is found. Kingston conceals who he is and why he has come, letting the town take him for a drifter. Its preacher and mayor, Abraham Brant, offers him the job of sheriff, and Kingston accepts so that the position will hide his real work. The townspeople meet him with hostility. Brant is drawn to Kingston's wife, Marisol. Naomi, a prostitute treated badly in the town, offers Kingston information if he will help her leave her life there.
