Plot summary
Jack Calgrove returns to his home after the Civil War, having spent time as a prisoner of war and having been given up for dead. He finds that his wife has died and learns that his son Phil and his daughter Lizzy, taken for orphans, are on a train bound west to be given to new families. That train crosses country held by old enemies. Jack joins another former soldier, a freed slave and a troop of Native American sharpshooters, and they ride to stop the train, meaning to reclaim his children before they are handed over to families they do not know.
