Plot summary
In 1889 Montana, Lefty Brown has spent his life riding alongside Edward Johnson, who has just been elected to the Senate. Before the move east, three horses are reported rustled, and the two men ride out to look. A sniper shoots Ed down, and Lefty carries the body home, where Laura blames him for not protecting her husband and ignores his promise of vengeance. Lefty buries Ed's rifle and sets out alone. Word of the killing brings Governor James Bierce and the marshal Tom Harrah to the ranch; Tom rides after Lefty, meaning to stop him before trouble finds him. On the trail, a young would-be gunslinger named Jeremiah Perkins asks to come along, and Lefty takes the boy with him.
