Plot summary
A house in the Sonoran Desert, away from Los Angeles, is where Grant Williams and his elder son Richard have brought the family. The rest of them return from a long trip and find the rooms in disarray, so they suspect a break-in, yet nothing has been taken. News reports describe a spectacular triple supernova. Jenny, the young granddaughter, notices a glowing structure behind the barn, and when the adults go to look, nothing is there. Richard drives into the city to finish important work. That evening, unidentified craft appear overhead and seem to land in the hills nearby. The household loses electrical power, and Jenny makes telepathic contact with a tiny green glowing creature. Ana also sees one of the small figures beckon to her but pays it no attention.

- The score became the first digital soundtrack ever released when record label Varèse Sarabande contacted composer Richard Band about a digital album, beating Star Trek: The Motion Picture to that milestone by two weeks.
- Composer Richard Band, brother of producer Charles Band, wrote his first orchestral score for the film, traveling to London to record with the New London Symphony and laying down 45 to 50 minutes of music in a single six-hour session.
