Plot summary
Dr. Rynning, an aging scientist with a heart condition, commands the XB-13 on a voyage into Spectrum, a solar system he discovered, hoping to find the source of the vampire plague bearing down on Earth. A meteor storm leaves the ship out of contact with ground controllers Dr. Manning and Valerie, and the crew sets down on an unknown planet for repairs. Rynning stays aboard while Commander Steve Bryce, Captain Bob Scott, Willy and Linda explore. The air matches Earth's except for a radiation that keeps changing its color, and the planet holds prehistoric creatures. Three cavemen chase a screaming girl in white; Willy tackles her, and Linda implants a communicator in her brain that gives her English. She names herself Malian and tells of her people, the Tagani, hunted by the blood-thirsty Tubatons.
