Plot summary
A van carrying black-market animals stops on a North Carolina island, and a crate of eggs that smell rotten goes into the swamp. Years later the hatchlings have become full-grown Komodo dragons, and an oil company's pollution has fouled the island. The family arrives at their old vacation home. Patrick and his dog, Buster, meet a small lizard; when he stays out to catch it, his parents search for him. He hears them calling, is attacked by something he never sees, and is found in shock. His grandmother asks Dr. Victoria Juno, a psychiatrist, to help him. The grandmother supports a trip back, and Victoria travels to the island with Patrick; his aunt Annie comes along, unhappy about it.
