Plot summary
In the France of Louis XIV, Monsieur de Sainte Colombe loses his wife and withdraws from the world. He builds a small cabin in his garden to play the viola da gamba, and he raises his two daughters, Madeleine and Toinette, teaching them music. The three perform together for noble audiences, and word of his playing reaches the court. Caignet, an envoy of the king, invites him to play at Versailles, and Sainte Colombe refuses; the offended king sees to it that few attend their concerts. Marin Marais, who lost his place as a choirboy at the Louvre when his voice changed, comes to the house and asks to be taken as a pupil.
