Plot summary
Augustine works as a kitchen maid at a dinner party in Belle Époque France when her hands go numb and she collapses in a violent fit. The fit leaves one eye paralyzed, and she is taken to the Salpêtrière hospital. There she meets Jean-Martin Charcot, a neurologist who notices her after she has seizures in his presence. He examines her, finds she has no feeling on one side of her body, and learns that she has never menstruated. Charcot chooses Augustine as a case to present before other doctors, hoping to secure support for his work. He induces one of her fits under hypnosis in front of them, and the demonstration wins their applause. Augustine becomes central to his research, moved into her own room as he continues to study her. She is nineteen.
