Plot summary
David buys an odd assortment of items at a hardware store, Aaron hides a loaded rifle among camping gear, and Troy is at home settling in for a weekend of drinking and making holiday plans. Telling their partners they are going fishing, David and Aaron wait until Troy walks to a nearby bottle shop, then break into his house and ambush him when he returns. They seize him at gunpoint, drug him, bind him and drive him into the bush. There they tie him half-naked to a tree and tell him that Stephanie, the young woman he raped and murdered twelve years earlier, was wife to one of them and sister to the other. Angry that his prison sentence was reduced, they tell Troy what they intend to do to him.

- Multiple COVID-19 lockdowns in Victoria forced the production of Matthew Holmes's The Cost to stop and start, so filming stretched over 13 months, mostly on weekends, before wrapping in March 2022.
- Some elements of The Cost, including the flashbacks to the character Stephanie, were inspired by the real-life murder of Jill Meagher.
- To create greater realism in The Cost, the cast were given a great deal of freedom to interpret their characters and shape their own dialogue during filming.
