Plot summary
Maria is an Australian-Indian journalist. When a student from India is attacked in Melbourne, she is sent to investigate, and the case brings her together with Giriraj. The man who came to the student's aid on the train is an untouchable, of a caste far below the student's own, and his high caste counts for nothing with the men who attacked him. Maria's path with Giriraj runs through the social history of India and of modern Australian society, which carry their own forms of discrimination and violence, in the tensions of a cosmopolitan city and in the caste system of India. The attack sends shock waves through the international community.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- India's Central Board of Film Certification held up The Colour of Darkness's release for several months and demanded changes, including removing the word achhoot (untouchable) and cutting a line describing India as the "most racist country in the world."
- Girish Makwana auditioned almost three hundred actresses and took about two and a half years to cast Vidya Makan as the journalist Maria.
- Girish Makwana drew the story from his own family's history: they were untouchables in Gujarat, and their experience of the caste system shaped the film.
- Producers Lorraine and Girish scouted locations for six months before settling on the inner rural area of Kheda, to give the feel of a real Indian village in the 1960s.
- Girish Makwana recruited Pragyan Patra to sing for the film after seeing her on the reality show "Voice of India"; she had first auditioned for him via a WhatsApp recording.
