Plot summary
Lidia Yuknavitch grows up in a house where her father Mike beats and molests her and her older sister Claudia, while their alcoholic mother Dorothy ignores what is happening. Swimming and writing are her refuges from it. Claudia leaves home as a teenager; Mike tries to keep Lidia from college as a way of controlling her, but she fights back and goes to Texas, where she studies, swims and explores her sexuality. The memories of her father stay with her, and her partying, drinking and drug use quickly put her grades and her place on the team in danger. On campus she meets Philip, and the two marry quickly.
