Plot summary
Javed Khan, a British-Pakistani teenager, lives in Luton with his parents, Malik and Noor, his sister Shazia and Yasmeen. He writes poetry and song lyrics for his best friend Matt's band, and Matt finds the lyrics depressing. His father disapproves of the pop music he likes. At his new sixth form college he is one of only two British Asian students, and the other, Roops, gives him two Bruce Springsteen cassettes. Javed also develops a crush on a fellow student, the activist Eliza, and his writing teacher, Ms Clay, encourages his writing. Racism follows him at college and near his home, and money is tight after Malik loses his job at Vauxhall Motors.
