Plot summary
Ronnie Anne turns twelve and wants to spend the summer at Xtreme Eddie's, a theme park open only to kids twelve and older, with her best friend Sid. Her family has other plans and takes her along on a trip to Japunda, Mexico. In a shop there, Ronnie Anne buys a necklace that the shopkeeper says is the last link between humans and gods, over her mother Maria's objections. At Mama Lupe's house, Carlos tells her that a nearby mountain is the petrified demigoddess Punguari, who was denied full godhood by her parents because of her rebellious, irresponsible ways. Ronnie Anne goes to the mountain to skate with Sid over a video call, falls, and breaks the necklace, and the ground shakes. A girl named Shara calls for help with her leg trapped under a branch.
