Plot summary
Michael returns to his Upper East Side apartment to get ready for Harold's birthday party. Donald phones to say he will arrive early because a psychiatrist appointment fell through. Then Alan, Michael's former Georgetown roommate, calls in tears; he says he has to tell Michael something and that it cannot wait. Michael invites him and warns the other guests that Alan is heterosexual and does not know Michael is gay. Emory arrives with Larry and Hank, a couple whose relationship is strained, and Bernard brings Donald a stack of books. Alan first says he will not come, then appears to find the group dancing. He gets along with Hank, whom he takes for straight, and is uncomfortable with Emory. When Michael takes Alan into the bedroom to hear what is so urgent, Alan avoids the subject.
