Plot summary
In 1975, a young Michelle Darnell is sent back to the Chicago orphanage she was adopted from, and over the next several years she passes between that home and others. In the present, she runs three Fortune 500 companies and writes best-selling self-help books. At an event at the United Center, she and her rival Renault clash over a stock deal she closed through insider trading, and he reports her to the SEC. A disastrous television interview follows, then her arrest and a five-month prison sentence. Renault takes over her companies, the government freezes her assets, and her home is foreclosed. With nowhere left to go, Michelle turns to Claire, her former assistant.
