Naima Wifstrand
Biography
Naima Wifstrand was an actress and singer who grew up poor in Stockholm and joined the Anna Lundberg traveling theater company in 1905, touring Sweden and taking small parts in Helsinki and Stockholm. In 1910 she went to London for voice lessons with Raymond von zur Mühlen. She won leading operetta roles by Emmerich Kálmán and Franz Lehár during the First World War, and into the mid-1920s she was the reigning operetta star in Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo. Wanting more dramatic parts, she found little work and spent time in England singing and playing guitar. Her breakthrough came in 1937, when Per Lindberg cast her in a Swedish tour of Brecht's The Three-penny-opera, and Brecht later wrote Mother Courage for her. In 1948 she played at Södra Teatern with Nils Poppe in Me and My Gal, and in the 1950s she worked with Ingmar Bergman at Malmö Stadsteater, appearing in Smiles of a Summer Night (1955) and The Magician (1958).
