Plot summary
Tuck Hostetler, the local mechanic who took Dawson Cole in when he was a teenager and became a father to him, has died at ninety-two. Dawson, who works on an oil rig off the Louisiana coast and recently survived an explosion there, returns to his hometown after nearly twenty years away to see Tuck's wishes carried out. He finds that Tuck also asked Amanda to be present. She and Dawson were high school sweethearts; she is now married to Frank Reynolds, and their son Jared is about to graduate. Dawson was raised in a criminal family headed by his abusive father, Tommy Cole. Tuck's instructions send the two of them to a cottage he once shared with his wife, to scatter his ashes there.

- Paul Walker was originally cast as the male lead Dawson Cole but died in a car accident on November 30, 2013, before filming began. James Marsden, who had co-starred in the 2004 adaptation of Sparks' 1996 novel The Notebook, was offered the role in January 2014 in his place.
