Plot summary
In 1972, the six Herdman siblings have a reputation as the town's worst kids. They bully neighbors, steal, and make life miserable for everyone. Beth Bradley narrates, wishing they would disappear. Her mother, Grace, volunteers to run the 75th anniversary Christmas pageant after the usual organizer breaks both legs. Beth's brother Charlie mentions church treats to a Herdman tormentor, so the whole family shows up at Sunday school. Unexpectedly, they stay. Imogene then declares she will play Mary, and her siblings claim the largest roles by intimidating the other children. The community is appalled that Grace allows them to take part.
