Plot summary
Nick Fury, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., restarts the Avengers Initiative after Loki seizes the Tesseract, an energy source of unknown potential, from a remote research facility where astrophysicist Erik Selvig leads a team studying it. Loki has struck a bargain with the Other, a representative of an extraterrestrial race called the Chitauri: an army with which to conquer Earth. He turns his scepter on Selvig and other agents, Clint Barton among them, binding them to his will. Natasha Romanoff travels to Kolkata to recruit Bruce Banner, whose gamma radiation research might trace the Tesseract. Fury approaches Steve Rogers, and Phil Coulson visits Tony Stark. Loki intends to rule Earth as its king.

- When Joss Whedon received Zak Penn's draft, he told Marvel's Kevin Feige that the studio did not “have anything” and that they should “pretend this draft never happened”.
- The film's post-credits shawarma scene was shot on April 12, 2012, the day after the world premiere; Chris Evans wore a prosthetic jaw to hide the beard he had grown, and shawarma restaurant sales reportedly surged in Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Boston after the film's release.
- In July 2024, a Lakota-language dub of The Avengers was released on Disney+, with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, and Jeremy Renner re-recording their lines; the project was spearheaded by Ruffalo, who had a previous relationship with the Lakota people.
