Trailer

Plot summary

The industrialist John Hammond has built an animal park of de-extinct dinosaurs on Isla Nublar, a tropical island off Costa Rica. After a Velociraptor kills a worker, the investors' lawyer, Donald Gennaro, wants outside specialists to declare the island safe before it can open. Gennaro brings the chaotician Ian Malcolm; Hammond invites Alan Grant, a paleontologist, and Ellie Sattler, a paleobotanist, and offers to fund their dig in return. Arriving by helicopter, the group is stunned by living Brachiosaurus and Parasaurolophus. At the visitor center they learn how the animals were made and watch a baby Velociraptor hatch. Hammond's grandchildren, Lex and Tim, join the first tour.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Jurassic Park (1993)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • On what was meant to be the last day of the Kauai shoot, September 11, 1992, Hurricane Iniki passed directly over the island; the cast and crew sheltered in their hotel, while Steven Spielberg and a small crew went outside and filmed brief footage that became the storm hitting Isla Nublar in the finished film.
  • While filming the T. rex attack on a tour vehicle, the animatronic struck the vehicle's plexiglass roof harder than planned and one of its teeth came out; it proved so hard to reinsert that Steven Spielberg kept shooting without it, so the T. rex has a missing tooth in the finished film.
  • The famous ripples in a glass of water on a tour vehicle's dashboard, caused in the film by the approaching T. rex's footsteps, were made by running guitar strings through the car and having a man on the floor pluck them; special effects supervisor Michael Lantieri worked the effect out the night before using a glass of water on his guitar.
  • Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfuss were considered for Alan Grant but ruled out as too expensive, and William Hurt, Harrison Ford and Tim Robbins all turned the role down before it went to Sam Neill.
  • Ariana Richards, who plays Lex Murphy, was called into a casting office and asked only to scream; she later heard she was the only girl taped that day who woke Steven Spielberg's sleeping wife, who ran down the hallway to check on the children.
  • Jurassic Park was the first film to have computer screens running on-camera in real time; earlier films could not get CRT monitors to display correctly on film and inserted the screens in post-production, and the crew solved the problem by dropping the refresh rate to 48 hertz.
  • After he finished Hook, Steven Spielberg wanted to make Schindler's List next, but Sid Sheinberg, president of Universal's parent company MCA, gave Schindler's List the greenlight only on the condition that Spielberg make Jurassic Park first.
  • Jurassic Park was first written to end with Grant using a crane to push a raptor into the jaws of a fossil tyrannosaur and Hammond shooting the other one with a rocket launcher, with the T. rex killed off earlier; the T. rex sequence shot at Warner Bros. made Steven Spielberg realize the dinosaur was the film's main star.
