Trailer

Plot summary

Gomez Addams still mourns his brother Fester, who vanished twenty-five years ago after a quarrel between them. The family lawyer, Tully Alford, is deep in debt to the loan shark Abigail Craven, and he notices that her son Gordon could pass for Fester. He proposes that Gordon pose as the missing brother and find the vault where the Addams fortune is kept. At a séance meant to reach Fester's spirit, a man walks in claiming to be him, with Abigail posing as Dr. Greta Pinder-Schloss, the psychiatrist who says she found him in tuna nets after twenty-five years in the Bermuda Triangle. Gomez welcomes him home and takes him down to the vault to watch childhood home movies.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Addams Family (1991)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • In the last three months of production the director of photography, Owen Roizman, quit and was replaced by Gale Tattersall. Within weeks Tattersall was rushed to hospital, halting production, and Sonnenfeld took over the cinematography while still directing the film.
  • Morticia's eyes were made to slant upwards by gluing fabric tabs at Huston's temples and running an elastic strap to the back of her head, with a second strap added to balance her lower face. The bands were so uncomfortable that unless she took them off at lunchtime she suffered severe headaches and rashes later in the day.
  • SPOILERBarry Sonnenfeld had originally intended to leave it unclear whether Fester Addams really was an impostor, but the actors strongly opposed the idea and picked then 10-year-old Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday, to speak for them. Her impassioned plea made him change the plot point, and he later agreed they were right.
  • The Addams Family pinball machine, made by Bally/Williams and released in March 1992, became the best-selling pinball machine of all time, with more than 20,000 units sold.
  • As the studio prepared the film for release, David Levy, a producer of the original 1960s TV series, sued Paramount Pictures, claiming the film infringed his property rights. The suit was settled out of court after the release, once Paramount greenlit a sequel on the strength of the film's success.
