Tony Azito

Biography

Tony Azito was an American character actor and eccentric dancer who became known for comedic and grotesque parts, often using his hyperextended body. Born in New York City, he studied at the Juilliard School and then danced for two years with Anna Sokolow's company. In the mid-1970s he returned to acting, appearing off-Broadway and at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, frequently in productions directed by Wilford Leach. His Broadway debut came in a 1976 revival of The Threepenny Opera. His best-known stage role was the police sergeant in the 1980 Broadway production of The Pirates of Penzance, a performance that led to a Drama Desk Award and a nomination for a Tony Award; he later repeated the role in the 1983 film version. His movies included Private Resort (1985), Bloodhounds of Broadway (1989), a cameo in The Addams Family (1991), and Necronomicon (1993). He also acted on Miami Vice, The Equalizer, and Beacon Hill, and he died in 1995.
