Plot summary
Macon Leary lives in Baltimore and writes travel guides for business travelers who want to get through a trip with as little fuss as possible. His marriage to Sarah is coming apart after the death of their twelve-year-old son, Ethan, and she moves out of the house, leaving Macon the family dog, Edward. Edward trips Macon on the stairs and Macon breaks his leg. He hires Muriel Pritchett, an eccentric animal hospital worker and dog trainer with a young son, Alexander, to teach the dog obedience. Muriel's direct interest in him pushes against his guarded, orderly habits, and he begins to open up to her.
