Plot summary
A year after he got too scared to go further with Melody Barnegat in her pool, Brian David calls her at work to invite her on a movie date. She agrees to a 4:30 showing of Bucklick, an R-rated detective comedy drawn from a book series her mother loves. Brian keeps a tape recorder with him to note down his thoughts, since he wants to be a writer, and then meets his friends Belly, an awkward wrestling fan, and Burny, who calls himself a ladies' man and obsessively washes his pickup truck. Burny dislikes that Brian invited Melody, because the three boys pay for one movie and sneak into two more. At Atlantic Cinemas, manager Mike bans customers he dislikes and drives a modified Batmobile he calls the Movie Mobile.
