Plot summary
Brian Gilcrest was once a celebrated Air Force officer. His career ended in controversy after his time in Afghanistan, and he now works as a military contractor. He flies back to Hawaii with billionaire Carson Welch, who wants to build a space center on local land and launch a privately funded satellite from it. Brian's task is to negotiate with Native Hawaiian leaders, and the Air Force assigns Captain Allison Ng as his liaison. Ng is proud of her one-quarter Hawaiian background, and her optimism revives Brian's boyhood interest in space. The job also brings him back into contact with Tracy, an ex-girlfriend who is married with two children.

- The Media Action Network for Asian Americans accused the director and studio of whitewashing the cast after Emma Stone was cast as a character stated to be of one-quarter Chinese and one-quarter Hawaiian descent, and Crowe apologized for the choice.
- The whitewashing row resurfaced at the 2019 Golden Globe Awards, where co-host Sandra Oh joked that Crazy Rich Asians was "the first studio film with an Asian-American lead since Ghost in the Shell and Aloha", prompting Stone, who was in attendance, to shout "I'm sorry!"
- Pamela McClintock of The Hollywood Reporter estimated that the film's financial losses finished at around $65 million by the time it ended its global theatrical run, based on a budget of "$37 million-plus".
- On February 2, 2015, Sony Pictures announced that the film's final title would be Aloha; until then it had been developed under the working titles Deep Tiki and Volcano Romance.
