Plot summary

A meteor struck the Earth long ago. In the present, the industrialist John Greystoke pays for an expedition to Uganda to find it and capture its energy, with the scientist James Porter assisting, but the search comes to nothing. Over a semi-active volcano the Greystokes' helicopter goes out of control; John takes a glowing rock sample from a cave and sets off a chain reaction. The helicopter crashes and only his son John Jr. survives. The gorilla Kala, who has just lost her own child, finds the boy and raises him in her troop, where he invents the name Tarzan. Years afterward Tarzan leaves the gorillas and settles near the wreck, whose emergency beacon is triggered and reaches Greystoke Energies. Its chief executive, William Clayton, offers to fund Jane Porter's conservation group if she travels to Africa with him.
