Plot summary
Two women in crisis trade homes for two months. Marilyn Vine lives in suburban Connecticut, where she is grieving the death of her son Dale and has grown distant from her husband Greg. In Dublin, Ria Lynch's marriage ends when Danny leaves her for Bernadette, who is pregnant. Marilyn telephones Danny to propose an exchange of houses, and Ria offers her own. On Tara Road, Marilyn keeps the reason for her retreat to herself and meets Colm, a restaurateur and friend of Ria who tends the vegetable garden. In Connecticut, Ria takes a job cooking and becomes friendly with Greg's brother Andy.

- Maeve Binchy, whose 1998 novel Tara Road the film adapts, once swapped her house in London to stay in Sydney, Australia; she said the trip inspired the story though it was not autobiographical, since she and the people she swapped with were happily married, settled couples.
- Maeve Binchy praised the screenwriters of Tara Road for condensing her 600 page novel into a 109-page script.
- Binchy told the filmmakers which Dublin location she had in mind for Tara Road, but it proved impractical, so they found a similar spot and used Kenilworth Square in Rathgar, Dublin, for the title street.
