Plot summary
Mary Lavelle is a young Irishwoman. She leaves Ireland for Spain, where a job as governess in a prominent household awaits her, teaching English to the family's daughters. Behind her is a political activist she is expected to marry, and the pressure she feels about that plan. The Spain she arrives in is in political upheaval. In the household, the eldest son, Francisco Areavaga, is married, and he too is caught up in the fight against Franco and fascism. Mary becomes drawn to him.
