Ming warriors under the elderly master Bai-Luan arrive during the Sengoku period with Lord Akaike's soldiers as escort; in return for gold, the lord has agreed to let them raise a large altar on his land. Bandits who ambush their column are cut down by the Western swordsman Luo-Lang. Elsewhere, a young orphan named Kotaro travels with his dog Tobimaru, and the monk Shouan directs him toward Master Zekkai at Mangaku Temple in Akaike Province. Hiding in an abandoned temple, Kotaro meets Nanashi, a wandering swordsman. A Ming warrior attacks them, and Nanashi kills him, but Tobimaru takes a wound from a poisoned dagger.
