Plot summary
With Christmas approaching, wealthy Chicago advertising executive Drew Latham dreads spending the day alone. His girlfriend, Missy Vangilder, breaks up with him over a planned holiday in Fiji, and he decides what he needs is to relive the Christmases of his childhood. Since that is impossible, he rents a stand-in family instead: Tom, Christine and their teenaged son Brian Valco, who live in his old house in suburban Chicago. Tom wants nothing to do with him until Drew offers a large sum, with a contract that runs out at the end of Christmas Day. The Valcos have problems of their own, and Drew's arrival makes them worse.

- Ben Affleck was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor for the film, and lost to George W. Bush in Fahrenheit 9/11.
- In February 2006 Viacom acquired the rights to Surviving Christmas and all 58 other live-action films DreamWorks had released since 1997, and in 2021 Paramount put it out on a triple feature DVD set with Office Christmas Party and Bad Santa.
