Plot summary
Mary Katherine Gallagher, an orphan, lives with her grandmother and longs for superstardom and a first kiss. At St. Monica's Catholic high school she is drawn to Sky Corrigan, the most popular boy there, and her awkwardness sets her apart from the other students. After she is caught kissing a tree, she lands in special education classes, where she makes a friend of Helen Lewengrub, and Eric Slater, a new student with a bad-boy reputation, takes notice of her. A talent show is announced, with a trip to Hollywood and a role as a movie extra for the winner. Her grandmother refuses to let her take part, though Helen and a vision of Jesus urge her to audition anyway.
