Plot summary
Alice Lamb lives alone in a cottage on the Kent coast, where she writes about mythology and folklore and keeps to herself. The village children call her a witch, and she has little patience for company. In 1940 a young boy named Frank is evacuated from London and left with her, and she agrees to keep him only briefly, certain he will get in the way of her work. Frank settles into the house, takes an interest in her research, and hears about Fata Morgana mirages and the Summerland, a pagan idea of an afterlife. Her memories turn to her university years and to Vera, a fellow student who hoped to write novels.
