Plot summary

After the Second World War, Colonel Richard Cantwell, a United States Army officer in Venice, is haunted by the war, has learned that his illness is terminal, and takes the news without complaint. He commandeers a military driver to bring him into the city for what he expects to be a final duck hunt and a visit to places he knew. Along the way he looks into an alleged war crime. A chance encounter with Renata Contarini, a young woman of the Italian nobility, breaks into the solitude he had planned and rekindles his hope. The screenplay adapts Ernest Hemingway's 1950 novel.

  • The film's shoot was delayed by problems securing insurance and began in late 2020 or early 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy; a nationwide lockdown let the cast and crew film in an empty St Mark's Square in Venice.
  • Peter Flannery's plan to adapt Ernest Hemingway's Across the River and into the Trees dates to 2016, when Pierce Brosnan, Isabella Rossellini and María Valverde were set to star under Martin Campbell.
