Plot summary
Elizabeth and Bertrand Lannier live comfortably in Paris, and from the outside their marriage looks settled. Bertrand works as a real estate agent and spends his time with much younger women and men behind his wife's back. Elizabeth fills her days as a housewife and has been waiting for a summer holiday with their daughter Emilie. At the last moment Bertrand cancels the trip and puts Julie in his place, which leaves him free in Paris. Their neighbors Véronique and Jérôme have different problems. Jérôme is out of work and reads gas meters, and he hides his sense of failure from Véronique and their son Loïc. Véronique wants to keep up with the Lanniers, and the two households settle into one seaside resort.
