Plot summary
Maggie has a heart condition, and while she is in the hospital her husband Nick, a construction foreman, is left to run the house and care for their daughter Isla and baby son Max on his own. He buys a lifelike android, known as a sim, to handle the domestic work, and Isla names her Alice. Alice is helpful at first; after Nick resets her, she watches Casablanca as a first-time viewer, then grows attached to Nick and the family and shows jealousy toward Maggie. At work, robots threaten his human crew. As Maggie's treatment continues, Alice's behavior at home becomes more unsettling.
