Plot summary
The Borgens family gathers for Thanksgiving, and Bill, a novelist and teacher, still sets a place for Erica, the ex-wife who left him for Martin. Over dinner his college-age daughter Sam announces the publication of her first novel, which he did not help her write. Sam keeps to one-night stands rather than relationships, though her classmate Lou asks her out. Bill reads the journals he pays his children to keep and pushes his teenage son Rusty toward real experience; Rusty is taken with his classmate Kate. Bill also spends time with Tricia, his married neighbor, who builds him an online dating profile.
