Plot summary
On an expedition beyond Avalonia's mountain wall, Searcher Clade finds a green plant that gives off energy and returns home with it while his father Jaeger presses on alone. Twenty-five years later, Searcher farms the plant, now called Pando, which fuels Avalonia, and his son Ethan, who has a crush on his friend Diazo, chafes at the expectation that he will farm too. When Pando begins losing its power, President Callisto Mal arrives in her airship to ask Searcher to find the cause, and he joins a descent into the giant sinkhole where Pando's roots lie. Meridian follows in her crop-duster, and Ethan and the family dog Legend stow away.
