Plot summary

Richard teaches archaeology at a university. He and his wife Juliette live with their young son Owen on a remote farm on the moors, a place that belonged to Richard's father, now dead. Owen has asthma and tells his mother he hears a whistling sound coming from someone he calls Jack Grey. The news disturbs Richard, whose own father abused him, and he faults Gordon, a longtime family friend who sometimes looks after the boy, believing Gordon has been filling Owen's head with frightening folk tales. Richard tells Juliette that Gordon must stay away from their son. At a village fete, screams draw the parents to a crowd, where a girl's pony has been attacked and blinded, and Owen sits alone with a sharpened, bloody stick.
