Plot summary

In 1995, Malik and his partner Aaron move into a house in a small town with Aaron's teenage daughter, Kayla, hoping to begin a new life together. Their neighbor Tiffany arrives with a housewarming gift. Malik and Aaron join the other residents at a bonfire, among them Tiffany's husband, Marshall. At night Malik hears noises and sees a hooded figure watching the house. Someone spray paints a homophobic slur on a wall; he covers it and tells Aaron nothing. He is haunted by memories of being attacked as a teenager. Mr. Rinehart, a neighbor from across the street, hands Malik a note and says he must not show it to anyone. Aaron tries to fit in with the neighbors while Malik grows wary of them, and Kayla keeps her own plans to herself.
