Trailer

Plot summary

In the early 22nd century, a blast of nebular lightning wrecks a space cruise liner, and three survivors, Nova, Reena and Meagan, take an escape pod down to the nearest habitable planet. Hostile locals seize them. A reward of 3,000 mega-credits is broadcast for their safe return. Wolff, a mercenary now working as a small-time salvage operator, hears it and decides the money will clear his debts and pay for ship repairs. The world is Terra 11, an old Earth colony quarantined since plague and civil war ruined it. After landing, Wolff and Chalmers, his engineer, set out in the Scrambler, an armored four-wheel-drive vehicle. Marauders called Zoners carry the women off before he can stop them. Nomads say the captives were taken into the Zone, ruled by Overdog McNabb. A teenage thief, Niki, offers to guide him there.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone (1983)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Original director Jean LaFleur was fired after only two weeks of filming the $4 million production and his footage was scrapped; Lamont Johnson replaced him and insisted makeup, costuming and production design be completely reworked.
  • Ernie Hudson says that when he was first cast he was told Jeff Bridges would play the bounty hunter Wolff, before Peter Strauss was cast in the role.
  • In 2015 executive producer Ivan Reitman said the film had to be shot with two cameras in what is now called native 3-D, that it was hell, and that there were no screens to show it in, so it was not practical in 1981.
  • Make-up artist Tom Burman said the production, costuming and makeup departments were given free rein: Molly Ringwald's early makeup looked like a Mandrill, scav costumes were so thick with mud some actors could barely move and one couldn't get through doors, and the electric vehicles were over-designed with spikes and studs.
